Professor
Gary Thorgaard is well
known for his basic and applied genetic research in
fishes, especially trout and salmon. He and other WSU
researchers are working to preserve the genetic record of
Northwest salmon as an insurance policy against
extinction. In cooperation with the Nez Perce Tribe and
the University of Idaho, scientists are collecting salmon
sperm for frozen storage. The project is intended to
maintain diversity of the salmon and steelhead gene pool
in the Columbia Basin. He is the former director of WSU's
School of Biological Sciences.
